Galvin At The Athenaeum - Restaurant Review

Galvin At The Athenaeum

Cuisine: British
Style Points: 4/5
Price: £££
Overall: 4/5

Galvin at The Athenaeum is a lush fine dining restaurant from Michelin-starred London chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin. Located near Hyde Park in a decadent Athenaeum hotel, the restaurant champions Britain’s delicious homegrown produce from independent farmers across the UK.

The restaurant itself was looking beautifully festive when we arrived, with fairy lights aplenty and crackers on every table. We certainly couldn’t wait to tuck in!

What’s on the menu?

We decided to start our festive meal with Champagne whilst we perused the classic British menu.

We started with warming parsnip and cider soup served with pickled apple, as well as heritage beetroot salad with walnuts and Westcombe ricotta on crisp sourdough. Both dishes were so much more than just a soup and a salad as they were packed full of flavour and texture.

For my main course I tried the yellowfin tuna burger with Asian sesame slaw and avocado. This was a rich dish which evidently used top quality yellowfin tuna evident in the fresh taste. The portion was quite large and as tuna is quite heavy I couldn’t quite finish it!

We also tried the Ayrshire pheasant with celeriac gratin, cranberries and Alsace bacon, which was delicious and a reasonable portion size.

For dessert we tried the apple tarte tatin with cider brandy cream and as always I couldn’t resist ordering the chocolate dessert. In this case, it was the velvety Valrhona chocolate tart with divine pistachio ice cream. Both desserts were delectable and certainly ended the meal on a high.

Price?

Galvin At The Athenaeum is a fine dining restaurant and the prices reflect this. My yellowfin tuna burger was £21.50 which is certainly on the upper end of the scale. However the restaurant offers a set menu which features some of my favourite dishes and costs £24.50 for three courses.

Overall: 4/5

Galvin At The Athenaeum is a lovely restaurant serving classic dishes. It is the ideal place to dine for a celebration and we certainly had a delightful and satisfying evening.
