Wild Radish recipe box review

As I’ve been cooking at home much more recently, I set out to learn some new recipes to expand my skill set. In particular I wanted to learn to cook special dishes that can be made for celebrating at home, as we’ve all been doing much more of that! I don’t always want to resort to getting a takeaway, so being able to create luxurious dishes at home would come in very useful.

So I decided to try Wild Radish. Wild Radish is a chef-lead recipe box subscription, with recipes from the likes of Phillip Howard, Anna Hansen, Alyn Williams and Marianna Leivaditaki (of Morito).

The chefs create dishes that share their love of food, cooking and great seasonal ingredients, providing easy-to-follow recipes to recreate restaurant-quality dishes from scratch at home. Perfect for those missing dining out at the moment, like me!

These recipe boxes are delivered weekly or fortnightly and contain the ingredients and chef tips to create a meal for two at home. The menus include one meat, one fish and one vegetarian choice, of which you can choose one. You can also skip, cancel or change particular scheduled deliveries.

What I like about Wild Radish is that they use the same suppliers as their chefs, providing customers with farmers market fresh ingredients that are unable to buy elsewhere.

Additionally, each recipe box comes with a tailored surprise that pairs with the meal, such as fresh bread and salted butter, artisanal chocolate or even a bottle of matched wine for the food

Menu:

I tried the meat option which was the quail with chickpeas, burnt butter yoghurt and cucumber sauce, a recipe devised by Marianna Leivaditaki.

The vegetarian option for that particular week was grilled celeriac with truffle hummus with cavolo nero and hazelnut, pear and mustard pesto, and the fish option was pan-fried hake and braised lentils with wild mushrooms, parsnip cream and crisps.

Although I had never prepared quali before, the instructions were clear enough for me to follow without too much difficulty. I loved the strong and fragrant flavours that were utilised in the dish, particularly as they were ones I wouldn’t normally cook with. For example the chickpeas were dry roasted in Mediterranian spices which added a beautiful richness to them that I have never before been able to draw out of chickpeas!

After spending about 90mins in the kitchen putting together all the different aspects of the dish, we were really pleased with the result. The quail turned out beautifully cooked and the marinate, inspired by Chef Marianna Leivaditaki’s Greek upbringing, was moist and delicious. The burnt butter yoghurt was immensely more-ish and complement the quail perfectly. We found that the portion was perfect for two people, and there weren’t any leftovers.

Cost:

Each subscription box costs £55 for a meal for two, and £70 with the addition of an expertly matched bottle of wine. This is a very reasonable price for the quality of the ingredients and for the high-end, restaurant style menu. The dishes on the menu are not standard meals that are cooked at home regularly, but are specially created for Wild Radish, which makes the price highly justifiable.

Overall:

We really enjoyed both the cooking process and the meal itself, as we not only learnt new cooking skills, but also got the chance to sample new flavours without having to head out to a restaurant. I’ll certainly try to incorporate some of these skills and flavours in my cooking too.
