Location and First Impressions:

Located in Cotswolds market town of Tetbury, The Close Hotel is a boutique country hotel that is the definition of English charm and splendour. Once you park the car behind the hotel you walk through a secluded peaceful little garden that really sums up the feel of the hotel - charming and tranquil.

The corridors are filled with antique paintings with gilded frames and the odd creak of the floorboards adds to the charm of the place. The Library Room is a cosy lounge area filled with comfy chairs and sofas and a proper fireplace to warm up the cockles after a walk in the countryside.

The town itself is the second largest in the Cotswolds and is filled with fabulous antique shops and boutiques that you can easily spend a few hours looking around in and finding a few antiques to fill up the house with when you return. It is the home of HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and the Duchess of Cornwall so if you spot a Royal remember to play it cool! There’s also the Instagrammable Chipping Steps which is an old entrance to the town and the cottages running down the side of the steps are as beautiful as they are historic.

St Marys’ Church is also worth a visit and has an impressive spire pointing to the heavens that can be seen from all directions as you enter the town.

Our Room:

Each of the 20 bedrooms is named after a species of bird and our room was called Dove. The quintessentially classic English decor is charming and full of character and I loved the matching floral patterns that can be found on the chairs, curtains and around the four poster bed. The bedroom overlooked the gardens and the large windows allowed lots of light in to provide a lovely warmth and glow throughout the room. The furnishings, tones and styles of the room perfectly capture the feeling of being in the English countryside.

There’s tea and coffee making facilities with complimentary water and milk and in the bathroom there’s luxurious Molten Brown toiletries as well as bathrobes and slippers. There’s also a claw foot bath with a tv on the wall for those that really want to take luxury to the next level! The walk-in rainforest shower is huge and I absolutely loved using it in the morning as it left me feeling refreshed and ready for the day.

The four poster bed is comfy and I fell asleep straight away. After having dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, of course!

Dinner at The Garden Room Restaurant:

The hotel’s restaurant is located on the ground floor and has an AA Rosette which made me more than excited for dinner. The restaurant has plenty of space and seating and is decorated and furnished beautifully with elegant teal coloured walls framed with colourful animal paintings and comfy leather and fabric chairs throughout. Of course, there’s also a fireplace or two to really let you know that you’re in the countryside.

The seasonal menu aims to showcase the best of the Cotswolds produce where possible and we were certainly enticed by what was on offer. The menu offers a good selection of vegetarian and meat dishes to please everyone. For Starters, we tried the Smoked Aubergine Caviar with Red Pepper Puree, Confit Cherry Tomato & Rosemary Crostini and Dressed Devon Crab with Chili, Lime & Coriander, & Sweetcorn Puree.

Both dishes looked as pretty as a picture with beautiful vibrant colours from the vegetables. The Devon crab was delicious and fresh with a lovely refreshing hit of lime and coriander running through it. The aubergine caviar was full of flavour and went perfectly with the crisp rosemary crostini.

For the mains, we went for the Home-made Burger with Bacon, Smoked Cheddar, Chili Mayo, Corn Relish & Fries and Sweet Potato, Coconut & Spinach Curry with Bok Choy, Roasted Cashews, Sambal & Basmati Rice. The burger was juicy and delicious but the curry was the real standout dish. I was pleasantly surprised by the flavour packed into the curry and it was really quite moreish with the creaminess from the roasted cashews.

For dessert, we tried the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Caramel Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream and Apple & Blackberry Strudel with Vanilla Custard. Both were equally tasty and left us content and ready for bed!

Breakfast:

After a refreshing night’s sleep, we were ready for breakfast. Served in the same space as dinner, hot drinks and toast orders are made upon seating. There’s a lovely buffet selection including fresh fruit juices, smoothies, fresh honeycomb, assortment of cereals, freshly baked pastries, fresh fruit and a selection of fruit compotes

The hot breakfast selection includes a Full English (back bacon, grilled tomato, field mushroom, hash brown Cumberland sausage, and free range egg cooked to your liking,) Homemade Waffles with a choice of banana, organic natural yoghurt, berry compote and granola, toasted sourdough with crushed avocado and poached egg and vegan hash (potato, red pepper, onion, baby spinach, broccoli and cherry tomatoes).

We went for the intriguing Ham Hock Potato Cake with fried duck egg and hollandaise and French Toast with grilled back bacon and maple syrup. The breakfast was delicious and we were really impressed with the quality as well as the service.

Sadly, the time had come to check out but we had a fabulous time with great food in a great atmosphere.

Overall:

We really enjoyed staying at The Close Hotel and felt it really mirrored the cosy and relaxing English countryside in which it is located. The decor and furnishings really set the tone and I really loved everything about the interior. A perfect place to enjoy the town of Tetbury and wider Cotswolds countrywide, The Close Hotel is a great choice for a relaxing countrywide weekend.
