Review: Afternoon Tea at Perkin Reveller, City of London

With the abundance of afternoon teas offered in London, it can be difficult to work out the good from the bad. I therefore had high hopes for the airy and bright Perkin Reveller which offers afternoon tea overlooking both the Thames and the Tower of London.

Would I Want Seconds?

The afternoon tea at Perkin Reveller consists of an assortment of sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream and various pastries. They also have a selection of teas to choose from. I informed the waiting staff that I was vegetarian upon arrival and they said that would be fine and adapted my sandwiches accordingly.

As someone who has experienced a fair few afternoon teas over the years, I truly believe that precision in the presentation is as key as the taste. Unfortunately in this case, the presentation was not up to par. The sandwiches were half crustless and half not, some with extra filling and some with barely any.

The scones were yummy and warm, however they were served with a tiny amount of jam and cream meaning that you had to use them very sparingly in order to have enough. The pastries consisted of a meuille feuille, a chocolate eclair and a lemon cake which were all so miniature they disappeared within two bites.

Could I Afford Seconds?

The price of Afternoon Tea at Perkin Reveller was reasonable at £19.50, however if the quality improved and customers were made to feel like they were having a special experience at a unique location then I am sure people would be happy to pay a higher price. Although unfortunately, at the moment, I think you could have a more impressive afternoon tea experience elsewhere.

Overall? 2/5

The atmosphere at Perkin Reveller as evening approached was lively and due to the superb location it was quite beautiful to see the sun setting whichever side you are seated.  I am not sure how lunch or dinner is at Perkin Reveller however I did feel it was a shame that they do not put more effort into their afternoon teas.
