Best Single Malt English Whiskies To Try This Summer

The Best Single Malt English Whiskies - Review

I’ve spent the last couple of years exploring England’s bountiful produce - from organic meat, home-made sweet treats, to English sparkling wine and much more. And England has even more to offer, including a tipple that is most commonly associated with Scotland and Ireland. Yes, that’s right, it’s whisky!

I absolutely adore single malt whisky and I think English single malt whiskies are the next big thing in the world of whisky and alcohol. So, without further ado, here are my favourite single malt English whiskies that are well worth a try. You’re guaranteed to be delightfully surprised and pleasantly satisfied…

Gulliver’s 47

A gently peated English single malt whisky, Gulliver's 47 is distilled in Norfolk by The English Whisky Company using barley grown in East Anglia. The whisky has been aged in bourbon casks from Jim Beam, which haven't been broken down and rebuilt.

The brand is inspired by Samuel Gulliver, a real person who travelled the world in pursuit of wines, spirits and liqueurs, and brought them back to 18th century Britain. Gulliver's 47 was then launched eight generations later by his descendant Stuart Gulliver, carrying on the legacy.

Tasting notes for Gulliver’s 47 include cinnamon, toasty oak on the nose, apples and pears on the palate and a finish of gentle spices and lingering notes of bonfire smoke. An excellent after dinner whisky.

Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky

This is the first single malt whisky from the Cotswolds Distillery, which also makes it the first single malt whisky ever distilled in the Cotswold countryside. This beautiful whisky has been produced using barley grown in the Cotswolds, distilled in their Forsyths copper pot stills and aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and red wine casks. This beautiful whisky is perfect simply served in a dram and sipped slowly to savour every morsel.

I absolutely love the unique Tasting Notes including spicy cereal, warm apple and vanilla custard.

Masthouse Single Malt

The Copper Rivet Distillery in Chatham, Kent is where Masthouse Single Malt is made in accordance to the distillery's very own Invicta Whisky Charter. It is distilled from Kentish malted barley from the nearby Isle of Sheppey, and is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and virgin American white oak barrels. This is a young whisky but it is still raw and uncomplex.

Tasting notes include apple and peachy fruit on the nose, a creamy full texture on the palate, finishing with vanilla and oatcakes. This whisky is guaranteed to grow on you with every sip.

Filey Bay Single Malt Flagship Whisky

Filey Bay is the first single malt whisky made in Yorkshire from field to bottle at the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery.

This Flagship whisky is made with 100% homegrown barley which is grown on their very own family farm. This particular flagship showcases their house style made up of complex and nuanced flavours. This is a light yet creamy whisky with tasting notes of peach and apricot in the nose, chocolate and maple syrup on the palate and scrumptious gingerbread and orange to finish.

Adnams Single Malt Whisky

The Adnams whisky range is crafted from grain to glass using a range of local ingredients at the award-winning Adnams Copper House distillery in Southwold. They have a huge passion for sustainability and it is one of the most water and energy-efficient distilleries in the UK.

Their whisky is small-batch and copper-pot stilled. It is aged in new French oak barrels for five years resulting in a smooth and rich whisky with bold flavours. This particular whisky was awarded Silver in the Single Malt category at the World Whiskies Awards 2021, making it one to try this year.

Tasting notes include oak and apricot on the nose, blueberry and fruit on the palate and caramel to finish.

Bimber Single Malt Whiskey

Based in London, Bimber Distillery produces beautiful premium, handcrafted single malt whisky in small batches. I tried the Bimber Ex-Bourbon Oak Casks, a limited release that has been matured in American white oak bourbon casks. Firstly, the bottle is ultra sleek and I love the long elongated design. Secondly, this is a whisky that deserves some serious appreciation and attention. I found myself inhaling with every sip; the smokey, oaky and subtle vanilla notes on the nose are complex and divine. The taste is equally compelling, with hints of cinnamon spice and autumn orchard fruits. This is a whisky that urges you to close your eyes and let your senses take you on a flavour voyage.

Lakes Single Malt Whisky

Founded in 2011, Lakes Distillery have the masterful whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi at the helm, who has helped produce a delicious range of single malt whiskies.

I’ve been a big fan of Lakes Whisky since trying their fabulous Colheita single malt, and this time around I sampled their newly released single malt, The Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.4. This is a well balanced whisky that has been matured in the finest, meticulously sourced Oloroso, PX and red wine oak casks.

Bottled at 52% ABV, the whisky is surprisingly smooth and possesses the same flavour-packed characteristics of the Colheita yet with more notes of Manuka honey, sun-dried dates, and roasted cashew nuts. The finish is combined of dried fruit, nuts and spice notes. A beautiful whisky to savour.
