Review: The Meat Co, White City

Style Points: 3/5
Price: ££
Overall: 5/5

The Meat Co bar area I've been to Westfield London quite a few times which means I've walked by The Meat Co many times. Although there are quite a few nice parts to Westfield (especially the Village shops...hello Tiffany's) I never really thought of it as the type of place for really nice dining options. But out on the Southern Terrace you can find The Meat Co.

Wall of wine

When we walked in we found a small bar area, but amazingly they've tucked a huge restaurant upstairs that I never would have expected! The sleek modern decor here is combined with tribal flair and there is even a huge wall of wine bottles leading to a glass room!

Would I Want Seconds?

When we had a look at the menu the chocolate and beetroot bread (£3.50) immediately stood out because of the unlikely combination - especially as a bread! We ordered that with potato and onion bread (£3.50) to start with. The menu also has a sampler of bread with four different types but the waiter suggested it would probably fill us up before our mains. So  instead of this we decided that we wanted to try a starter and ordered the South African speciality boerewors (£9.25).

Then for our main course we knew we wanted steak but I was also really curious about the kangaroo (as I’d never had the opportunity to try it) so we actually ordered three mains! Our helpful waiter  recommended our steaks based on our preferences. I ordered with the Black Angus Rib Eye (£37/£47 depending on size). It was tender and marinated in sauce to the extent that I didn’t even need the dipping sauce that came with it. Served with chips it was a winning combination as always!

I tried the kangaroo (£26) which had a different be equally good marinade sauce with red wine. The kangaroo meat was quite tough, but all in all I was pleasantly surprised that I actually liked the taste of it. I'm not sure it’s the type of thing I’d eat regularly - but it was an interesting experience at least. We also ordered the Wagyu beef (current market price £55 ) dubbed as some of the best beef in the world.  He also got a side of creamy spinach (£5) which he was glad to have because his mashed potatoes were a bit cold.

Then as if we hadn’t had enough gluttony for the evening we ordered dessert. We tried the Chef's Tasting Platter (£15) which is the best way to try a variety of desserts. There are six different desserts on the platter ranging from sorbet, tiramisu, raspberry and coconut ice cream and chocolate fondant

My favourite had to be thechocolate fondant which was rich, delicious and beautifully melty. It was a great mix of small desserts and was really nice to try a few bits.

Could I Afford Seconds?

This was definitely on the higher end price wise, especially compared to other restaurants I’ve eaten at while at Westfield. I do think that the food was excellent however and worth the money. Dining here would definitely be a special treat and the restaurant is nice enough to lend itself to that. Though you might want to eat before you shop so you don't run out of money, especially with the village shops so close!

Overall?

I really enjoyed my experience at The Meat Co. The steaks were delicious and immensely enjoyable. I'm definitely a meat and potatoes kind of girl so these plates were right up my alley.

The restaurant itself has a cozy and closed atmosphere despite being at a mall. It certainly wasn't what I expected going in and I was pleasantly surprised. I think we will be back one of these days when we've got a good steak craving!
